/site_media/ckeditor_images/71ecf8a7ad362d4abc18163b87c3e3c0.jpegI have my grandfather’s old IWC pocket watch. I called IWC and they wanted me to send it in, but they were unable to identify it. I have the movement (920232)number and another number. I took a detailed pic with my macro lens and you can clearly see the numbers and watch detail. Would anyone be able to tell me the model and maybe year? I just want to see if this worth being repaired.

    Hi,

Beautiful pocket watch. According to DateYourIWC (you can google that) the movement is a calibre 73 from 1930.

It is a high-quality movement (the fine adjustment of the regulation and the jewel on for the center bearing shows that). If it is worth the cost of restoring is mainly a subjective decision - you will probably not get your money back if you sell it, but as a family heirloom it is priceless.

If it was mine I would certainly make sure that it is in running order.

    Best regards,

    Henrik

    Hi again,

If the watch runs when you wind it there probably is nothing seriously wrong with it. In that case you can take it to any competent watchmaker (not those guys who just know how to change a battery) and it might be OK with a cleaning and lubrication job. This is much cheaper than sending it to IWC. But you should not have the watch running for any length of time without a service, the oils dry up as the years ticks by and running it without oil will damage the movement, which is completely unnecessary.

If there is more work needed or if you want the case and dial restored then sending it to IWC is your best option. It won't be cheap, but the result will be really spectacular. I have done that with a quite worn wristwatch and the result was first class.

    Best regards,

    Henrik
