Hi all - sharing a recent win for me. I'm always on the lookout for used
vintage IWC and frequently follow auctions and sales postings.

Porsche Design by IWC of the 80's have always intrigued me (was born in '83 so
it's the best decade :) and have owned a handful of Ocean 2000's - 3509 Bund
and other civilian types. Along the way I learned about the all black TiCON
with the special blackening process and really love the look / just my vibe.
Exceptionally little information on the net about them and almost no examples
    online to lust over.

This past month I found an auction for one and followed its status multiple
times a day for weeks / when the moment came I viciously used my tomahawk BID
button to ensure it came to me. Success!

What shown up was even better than expected - a nearly NOS example with full
links in the bracelet. After gently soaking the bracelet I could resize it and
    it wears totally perfect.

Now I'm enjoying wearing this mint rare bird and sharing my tale with you.
Would love to share and exchange info about these special Ocean 2000's.

    Matt

Congrats, this is a very rare piece. Saw the auction too.

I believe I once read the there were something like 300 made and were sent to
Porsche Design shops. No mentioning of IWC on the dial.

Will dig I to my data later today.

    Great find

Well, only very few information are avaylable on that TICON Story.

Just a copy of the only catalog with a black Ocean.

A rumor says, that about 150 have been made for Porsche customens as gifts ?!

And only a few for the market, as shown in the catalog.

I think, I have one those "market" models ?!?!?

    Hi Matt,

as promised, here I am but I didn't found much confirmed info on this rare
    beauty.

Somewhere deep in my memory is the story that the first series with only PD on
the dial and no reference to IWC were to be delivered to the Porsche Design
boutiques. I heard a number of 300, could be 150, not sure.

There were indeed some ( like to be seen in the catalogues ) with a reference
to IWC on the dial that were sold by IWC.

Here a text from Herr Niemman ( IWC employee ) : "In the begining of the
cooperation between Porsche Design and IWC it has been planed that IWC
delivers the watches directly to PORSCHE DESIGN (at that time in Austria). The
reason has been that PD want to have the marketing and sales department with
there own distribution chanels. This has been one of the reasons why realy
early IWC-Porsches did have no advice to IWC at the watch.
Later Porsche Design allows IWC to distribute the watches at IWC's chanels.
Beginning with this time the watches did have a "IWC-dial"."

I do believe that the crystal is also different from the normal Ocean 2000.

There was also a black Ocean 500 made.

Here some pics I took some time ago.

Thank you for sharing all those great PD models! So much to like in this
    iconic collaboration.

It's amazing what you'll find if you keep your eyes open long enough.

I'm hopeful IWC will release a new all black Ceratanium watch with full
    bracelet.
Originally thought a Genta-inspired Ingenieur would be great, but I'd accept
    an Ocean 2000 homage :)

That is a beautiful example of the breed! Congratulations on snagging it.

I enjoy many threads on the IWC Forum, but it's threads about the Porsche
Design big automatics (Ocean 2000/Kompassuhr/Titan chronograph) for which I
STARVE! Thank you for sharing your find.

If you get an opportunity, search for the IWC Museum curator David Seyffer's
doctoral thesis on the history of IWC (I found mine at Abe Books in the UK but
I see it on Amazon in the U.S.). There is much information about IWC's quest
for a hardened black titanium case and bracelet. Unfortunately, not much for
the "collector" side like number of units produced, variations, distribution,
etc. Still a fantastic read once you translate the German!

My Ocean 2000 is the usual grey/standard titanium color, but I am so fond of
IWC chronographs that I have decided to move it on, along with my other non-
chronograph titanium compass watch. Hope I don't come to regret it!
