    Hi all,

I just purchased a pre-loved Portuguese auto 5001-09 with the 51010 movement. I had been on the fence for a year over this watch but finally decided to take the plunge and LOVE it. It was running great for the first 2-3 days, only losing 5-6s/day which it sounds like is decent for this movement.

However, I noticed this morning after having the watch off my wrist ~8hrs overnight, that the movement had stopped no more than 5min after having been on my wrist! It was already wound to nearly full 7-days of power. I wound it fully, no luck in restarting. I then pulled the crown out and pushed back in - voila - it started up for about 10 seconds then stopped again! I repeated this, started up again for about 8-10 sec then stopped...I then pulled the crown again, reset the time, scrolled through the date wheel, and now it's been working fine for the past 5hours.

Should I be worried? Hope to avoid sending it in for service, and if it continues operating fine I'll probably hold off until another issue arises. I am unsure of the service history, and previous very well respected seller said no known issues. Watch originally purchased in 2007 however looks brand new.

    I appreciate your advice.

It's a fine watch and congratulations on your acquisition but it's 8 years old and probably needs a service. I would send it into IWC.

It sounds like your lubrications may be dried up. Hopefully a maintenance service is all you need but you most likely will be recommended to have a complete service done. Although you're automatic winding system may be fine, improvements have been made and an IWC service center would probably like to upgrade your watch internally. Do take it to an AD - they can handle that for you and you will end up with a like-new watch with a new 2 year warranty.
