Those OMAN special editions would fit as well.

    Hi Nelson

It seems to me that everyone selling an old watch describes it as rare.
Not sure it gains them any additional value since most buyers accept the puffery along with the details, but it's certainly a common practice. As for the other adjectives, they'll remain a point in context.

I think of the watches I might own that could be considered as such and there are few, despite reasonable arguments to the contrary. I do have one watch that I consider quite rare but only because it still lives in its original box on its original strap with its original papers. Based on its provenance I'm fairly certain it has never been on a human wrist - certainly not mine - but one can never know these things for sure. As I have never seen another set up like this, I consider this a rarity, but the watch itself, a beautiful Cal 88, is perhaps unique in its dial but certainly not rare as a model.

Maybe someday I'll cock the whole thing up and wear it and then rare no more will it be.

Wow, sold almost exactly 70 years ago, just a little short of a month away.

    Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

And the most rare, uncommon but not obscure fact : SOLD TO THE US ARMY!
    Adrian,

"SOLD TO THE US ARMY", which does not make it a military watch. ;-)
Fantastic find in Florida of all places. Congrats Terry.
I suspect it was sold to The Army and Air Force Exchange Service, or AAFES, to be sold to U.S. servicemen in a PX.

Great thread. I'm taking rare to mean 100 or less made. In which case, how about this, the IWC Portugieser for Kuwait, limited to 98 pieces I believe...

What about "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"?

OMG, that last watch above is just simply "Butt & Butt ugly"! ... and most certainly rare - never seen another like it.

If reading the above I understand correctly that any watch produced in limited numbers, is then "rare" - then this watch is rare for sure.

    One of only 36 pieces

However, if you want RARE - then why not VERY RARE or even "Bleu"?

I have to bite on this one: please tell us more about it, Giuliano.
It truly fits all three criteria: obscure, rare, and uncommon.

This watch has been discussed before in the forum. If I recall correctly it may have been issued to commemorate IWC's 120th anniversary as suggested by the dates 1868 1988.
To say that it is not an attractive design may be overstating the obvious. It may be a case of design by committee.

Clepsydra explained what I know of this watch. I think produced in 120 pcs. I don't want to judge the watch, just to show a piece in according with the subject.....
