Nothing wrong with a Dornie! But a 5001 is such a classic. And that is my favorite (non precious metal) combo.
Wear it in good health and we hope to see more you Greg!
Best,
Larry
my 2nd ref 5001 says Hi from Hong Kong, and unfortunately will not be joined by a cheap 5001-09 I narrowly missed out on at an auction yesterday... love the 5001s !
Congratulations. The 5001 is a real beauty. A fav amongst most members.
Wear it in good health.

Wise choice you simply cannot go wrong with this watch, congratulations.
Congratulations. My IWC collection also started with a 5001. It's still a favourite watch.
Thanks, everyone, for such wonderful words of welcome and encouragement. There are many things I am coming to appreciate about IWC's design motifs. I think they did "large" before Panerai, correct? Also, they use a lot of non-contrasting date wheels - where the background color of the date wheel pretty well matches the color of the dial.
I'm kind of a nostalgia buff for mid-century movies, clothing, typography, industrial and graphic design, photography, etc. The Portuguese line displays many of these aspects I like: the nautical references to ships' chronometers, the superb 1930's design of the applied sans-serif Arabics on the dial. Those numbers remind me of Bauhaus design, but with more soul, a touch more celebration and playfulness. The honesty and functionality of a large movement, a wide dial and a narrow bezel. The superb at-a-glance legibility, even to these eyes "of a certain age." It is clear and readable with refinement, without shouting or being insistent.
I'm really liking it and will try to take some better pictures soon!
