The reason we have "One of ..."

Paul,

I expressed my dismay at the lack of specific numbering of certain limited editions. In Hong Kong this week, I was told it had nothing to do with saving a few $s. It is due to the HK and Chinese market and the fact that a number with 4 in it is unlucky and unacceptable. HK is by far the largest market for Swiss watches and judging by the number of IWC boutiques, it is the biggest market for IWC.

Guess what. I believed the explanation. It might even be true!

A logistical problem?

Let's assume only the 4 is the problem. If a limited edition is meant for the Far East, there may be no way around it, "One of" is inevitable. If the limited edition is meant for the whole world, well, then you could organise something around this. If the limit is, say, 1.000, then about 300 watches will have a 4, 700 will have no 4 in the number: xx4, x4x and 4xx, where x = 0 to 9 without 4. As long as the market share of the Far East is less than 70% it could be organised that the Far East gets the watches without a 4, the rest of the world could get the watches with one or more 4's: I wouldn't mind having a watch with the number 444, or 666. Nobody considered to do it this way? It really should be something less than a nightmare.
