Last week, we saw a post about a new book with a part of the IWC history. A
wonderful piece of digging in the history of IWC.

To promote the book, we launch a photo contest here and ask for pictures of
pocketwatches from the era the book covers : so pocketwatches from 1875 to
1890. Gentlemen, let's see the oldies in your collection.

I have 5 copies of the book that I can give to the winners, so good luck.

I will start with two beauties from my collection, two gold Pallwebers, one
with a rare Dutch dial, the other with a French dial.

Not sure if it qualifies. Maybe before 1875

    Early Jones: movement no. 8xxx

    American case. 14K

    Hope you like it.

Out of book contest. Already got it. Thanks Tonny and IWC!

    These are my two favorites:

    1) A Ladies Jones (probably sold after 1875) in mint condition, For ages
everybody thought, this calibre never made its way into production, but very
few indeed were made and sold.

    2) A Seeland keywound Cal. 19, showing with dignity the traces of accompanying
its owner for quite a time. A watch somehow anachronistic as keywound watches
at this point in time were no longer state of the art.

Anyone else to join in with pics of Seelands, Cal. 28/29, Elgins, fullplates
    or Pallwebers?

    Cheers

    Th. Koenig

(as well outside the competition as I already have copies of the book.

This is a cal. Jones, pattern B, Romney savonette in 18k gold original case,
    with rather low serial
    number.

Here is a rare cal. key wound .Jones pattern 'C'. This pattern 'C' was of the
lowest quality Jones and by that few have survived. Most had a coin silver
case. This one has a gold filled case. Regards, Adrian

Here we have a cal. Seeland 28, bascule a pilliers. They are not rare and they
    have been
    linkedto
Pfister Droz and L.Tschopp. However they were designed by F.F.Seeland but
marketed after Seeland had left Schaffhausen.

What is special on this one is the material of which the movement has been
made. Nearly always they were made of guilded brass, but this one is made of
    polished nickel-silver.

This is the only watch-as far as I know- made by IWC that was key wound and
    stem wound.

It is a Seeland cal. 26. It was found in the US and it had a gold filled case.

Some collectors call this the 'hermaphrodite'

Aloha all - I don't see "IWC" anywhere but this looks like a Pallweber. The
case is silver and the case number and the movement number are the same. On
another note, King David Kalakaua was the last King of Hawaii (reigning
1874-1891). More than 10 years ago the Iolani Palace - now a museum -
accidentally found a gold IWC Pallweber among the former King's clothing. The
curator contacted David Seyffer and I've been waiting and waiting for him to
travel to Hawaii to check it out in person! -

Hi Adrian and every one else,

I have somehow missed this post, but oh, what beatiful watches!

On the hermaphrodite, is it relly key wound and stem wound? Should it be key
    wound and stem set?

There were a lot of strange solutions to the stem wind/stem set problem, but I
have never seen anything like this.

    Very best regards,

    Henrik

    Hello Henrik,

Cal. 26 is to my knowlege the only IWC pocket watch that is dual wind : over
the crown and by key. It is complete original

The significance of why IWC chose both winding methods is unknown. Fact is
that the full plates, cal. 24 and 25 that Seeland had designed ( copied) from
the Waltham 1857 model were key wind only. Alan Myers explains in the recent
book : ' International Watch Co.from 1875 to 1890 that all derivates from the
1875 Waltham full plate watches were called 'Bostons' as Waltham was located
    in Boston.
