Pilot Chronograph Continues to Wind When Screwing Down Crown

Hey All,

I have an IWC Pilot Chronograph.

I was wondering is it normal for the 3777 to have the movement continue to wind while screwing down the crown? Also I feel there is more resistance than compared to my other automatic watches.

The other watches I own seem to disengage the winding of the main spring and screws down smoothly with little resistance (does not continue to make the winding noise when screwing down).

A little bit of background on this watch. I recently bought a second hand IWC Pilot Chrono from ebay and it came with all boxes papers, and Warranty Card that matched the watches serial.

Appreciate any insight.

Are you certain that the crown is fully secured in its seated position. The crown wheel on the 3777 is quite firm to tighten fully,this is normal for the pilot chrono. Failing that,something may be stripped inside the the watch.A good tip is to push in the crown wheel firmly,whilst at the same time wind it to a closing position.

The winding of 3717 and 3777 is a little stiffer than other watches to wind.
It is normal also for the watch to continue winding until the crown locks down.

Enjoy your new to you 3777. It's a lovely chronograph.

Good to know that it is normal. Had me concerned for a bit, and considered sending it in for repairs.

I was very surprised at how much pressure it took to wind the crown down as compared to a submariner.

I make a practice to rotate the crown backwards while pushing it inwards until I hear or feel a click. At that point, start winding in opposite direction.

I never realised it before i read this question here, but it is the same on my cal 80110 which also makes the winding sound when i screw back the crown. Good to know it is normal.

I am inclined to believe that is the case with most of the current IWC collection.
