I was sitting at a sidewalk table of a local coffee shop enjoying the beautiful Spring morning and was chatting with a local guy who visits there quite often. He asked what time it was so I moved my sleeve to glance at my watch.

Catching sight of Plain Jane, he said "cool watch" and asked to see it. Turning it over in his hands, he said he really liked it and asked what it cost. I demurred so he said "must have been around $200, huh?"

That's what I love about Plain Jane. She's as understated as they come. I like it that way.

    And, what did you answer?

Yesterday I had to travel by train through a part of the Netherlands that is not well known as being very safe. So, my wife told me that gold watches were out of the question (is the watch more important to her than my personal safety?). When asked, I showed her the watch I would wear, the steel VC Portuguese. She hummed some kind of approval.

    Kind regards,
Paul, wearing steel VC Pilot's watch, which I considered a bit too flashy yesterday

Oh, I just Uhh huhhed a "something like that" and

    changed the subject.

Steel VC was a great choice for your trip. The Portuguese are so lovely and so special, yet so completely understated. Just one of the things I love about them.

    I have learned...

the hard way I must admit, that it is a waste of time attempting to explain the beauty and value of a good watch to a "non-initiated". I now just say that, if all you want from a watch is to give you the time, buy a Timex.

    Funny story!

I did look up the word 'demurred', that was my English lesson for the evening :-)

    Kind regards,

I get this all the time...

Unless one knows about mechanical watches, the usual response is that several hundred dollars buys a pretty fancy watch. Anything more and they would really think you are crazy.

    And, what did you answer?

Hey Ladies and gents, whilst I wont tell you not to believe everything that Paul says - I can concur with him on one thing. It seems that IWC's are more in demand these days :~)

So I guess whether it's New York, Paris or Amsterdam it does not make a difference sometimes it is dangerous to wear expensive timepieces on the train. Paul, that's why I live down here, south of the great rivers, it's still a relatively "safe" part of the country.

Met vriendelijke groeten / Best regards
Mark : wearing a rather flashy Pilot Mark XvI today!
