I had been managing my Uhren-virus fairly well, about as well as one can with only the occasional relapse. Then one day I found myself ferrying pocket watches across the pond and it was inevitable - I accidentally exposed myself!!! Here were these big, beautiful movements I could really see and hold. Like opening little treasure chests, there was so much more there than just a watch. Then the details in the cases struck me - so many variations in material and style. And the dials... the hands... the History!
I didn't know where to begin so I leant on our good freind, Mr. Mark Levinsohn, for some sound advice. What a mistake that was! It started with one, just to have a nice big beautiful movement to admire. But there were others, more beautiful movements. And some really nice cases. Maybe I should look for a new movement... And another... I have just acquired my 5th pocket watch and now have duplicated a movement. I am in trouble. Now fully afflicted, I must accept my fate. I have the virus bad as I now have a pocket watch problem!

    Ben,

I have a problem too. I am infected by the PW virus. Mr. Levinsohn, who is the great enabler and partner in crime, is to blame. I am not so bad off as you, however. I am in dutch for only two IWC pocket watches, but I also resurrected a few family American Elgin and Waltham Pos bring them back to life.

The first trip down danger land was this PW:

    And, the second acquisition:

Just one of the American restorations; there are four more that have not made it to the basement photo lab:

Some real beauties there Bill! I love the circular finishing on that last movement.

    Totally agree Ben!
WOW - your pocket watch collection has expanded really quickly!

I too love these mechanical masterpieces and I have 8 of them, including an 1880s key wind and a repeater, none IWC though.

This is bound to change though.....

Excellent acquisition. Does it have the engraving on the case back?
Worry not about the virus, it's benign. Trust me, I know. ;)

Hello Tony - there is not much left on the back. The gentlemen I purchased it from tells me his father got it during the war and it was subsequently denazified:

Well, Ben, it looks like I am in the exact same situation as you are. I also accumulated five pocket watches recently and four of them are IWCs. And I also own a "Kriegsmarine" pocket watch.
Hence, I fully understand your pocket watch problem ;-)

Almost missed this post - and what a great post it is!

I am more than happy to take blame here - as having watched Ben on this journey, I’ve not only seen his Pocket Watch passion and knowledge grow - but also benefited in having seen the enjoyment he is having whilst suffering this bout of ubervirus!

I am also bowled over by Antonio’s statement of “ubervirus is benign - trust me I know”.... somehow, I don’t think his better half sees it that way!

Hmmm....I am not so sure that the IWC pocket watch virus is benign.
After 29 years with ups and downs, virus mutations and anti-viral therapy it is still with me.
At least for me there is no hope for definitive cure.
    Adrian,
