    Hi all

I am currently considering investing in a new Portofino Automatic (ref IW356501), which houses the 35110 movement.

As I understand, IWC utilise a Sellita SW300 movement for this calibre having moved away from the ETA in the revamp of this Portofino model in 2011. However, finding any information on this subject has proven very difficult.

I would be grateful if someone with knowledge on this subject matter could help me in my research, in particular:

    1. Is the 35110 movement based on the SW300, as widely understood to be?

    2. If indeed it is based on the SW300, it the supplied movement made to IWC specification or is it standard-off-the-shelf; or is it an ebauche which IWC modify significantly (as I understand was IWC's traditional approach for the previous ETA/Valjoux movements)? If the latter (as I dearly hope), does anyone have details of the modifications IWC undertake.

    3. Do we know whether there are any issues with reliability since IWC have moved to Sellita - has anyone heard about or had any problems with this movement?

Many thanks for your help in advance. I really like the Portofino but I am reluctant to make a purchase until I understand what's under the cover.

I can't answer all your questions, but I do know that this calibre is produced to IWC's own specifications. I also was told (but have not confirmed via a second source) that it actually is slightly more costly that ETA 2892s and performs in tests at least equal to 2892s.

    Thanks Michael.

So does this mean IWC do not undertake any modifications to it, as say they do for the 7750 in the Portuguese Chrono?

Given that it's modified in production to IWC specifications, to my understanding there's no need for any further modifications upon delivery, other than quality inspection and regulation (which is never a simple task to do well).

I own a Portofino Automatic and love it. Not only does it appeal to me in terms of its appearance, but I've also been so impressed by its accuracy. Mine gains about 3 seconds daily - well within IWC tolerances of 0 - +7.

I would highly recommend this watch to any friend or interested buyer.

If you're interest to see what's 'under the hood,' do a quick google image search. I've seen pics of the Sellita movement stamped with IWC and all. I've not opened the back of my own because I'm far from qualified, but based on other images, it's nice looking with the usual Geneva stripes and perlage.

I agree entirely with Todd. I have recently bought a Portofino Automatic with the white dial. Mine runs excellent as well: so far about 2 s per day. I expect that it will serve you well. My old IWC automatic from the 70s worked with few problems for more than 4 decades. It went through a complete service by IWC last year.
