    Hello all

I had the great pleasure to try on a Portuguese Automatic 500109 with black dial and strap at my local AD, now my problem is that I have to have one as it is such a fantastic looking watch but with a hefty price tag so if I want it I may have to sell my Rolex dj to help fund it.
My question to all you experts is this, I also like the Portuguese Crono-Automatic 371438 which has a much lower price tag and if I get that I will not have to sell the Rolex, so could any of you explain the difference in price, is it the movement ie: inhouse versus ETA ? or am I talking out of my hat which is probably the case.
Sorry if this is obvious but I am quite new to IWC..

Thanks and have a great w/end Brian

    Different movement indeed

    Hello Brian,

Welcome to this great IWC forum! The difference in price between the Portuguese Automatic and the Portuguese Chrono is because the Portuguese Automatic has a fully in-house movement with automatic winding and 7 (SEVEN) days power reserve.

The Portuguese Chrono has a base ETA movement that is highly modified by IWC.

Both are nice watches and in your case, the Portuguese Chrono might be a better choice, especially if you also wear a watch while sporting, swimming and things like that. The Portuguese Automatic is probably not the best IWC for some of these activities.

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

I would go for the Portuguese Automatic

The chrono feature is nice of course, but chances are you will hardly ever use it. The Portuguese Automatic has a practical large date and a crystal back to admire the movement, which is quite a treat. Furthermore the power reserve feature is quite useful, and actually quite a fun to look at, to see how it progresses during the day. Last, I never read before that the Portuguese Chrono is more robust than the Portuguese Automatic: for a sporty adventure I wouldn't use either, I would buy an Ingenieur 3227 for that purpose. So if I were you (which of course I am not), I would sell the R.... and buy that wonderful Portuguese Automatic, you will never regret it.

    Kind regards,
    Paul, wearing Saint Exupéry Chrono

IMHO, go for the Port Auto....

it is a beautiful watch that is not too formal. The in-house movement with the 7 day reserve is very special. but, you should go with what turns you on.

    Early Congratulations!

The Port Auto is a stunning piece indeed and if you want something for the swimming pool or garden work, just pick up a simple Quartz piece :-)

Kind regards and make sure you post pictures as soon as you have your new watch!

    Portuguese Automatic

    Hi Brian,

I think it really depends on your daily rotuine. IMHO, IWC Port are for more dressier occasions or with going to work in suits, although, you can dress up or down with it but defintly nothing active. With your rolex, its basically a tool watch and you can do anything with it incl sports activities. So maybe its better you decide what you do everyday. The best scenario is to buy the Port without having to sell the DJ.
Now, between the 5001 and 3714, I will choose the 5001, its a bit pricier than the 3714, but the movement and display back is well worth it. 5001 is a regular prod watch and easily available at any ADs, so no need to hurry.
