I would like to know your opinion about this watch.

Could sound like a trite question but I really don’t understand what the forum thinks about this model.

I know for sure many think the 5001 overcomes the old (and first) reference, thanks to an improved beat rating, the free sprung, crystal glass (vs plexy) applied numerals, not to mention the date, these are the differences first came to my mind.

It seems collectors consider 5001 a more mature version of a sort of primitive progenitor in a prototypical condition, an hyperbola to illustrate an apparently considerable gap between the two references in the perception of the collectors.

I know this argument has been treated several times in the forum but I would like to have your opinion today.

I also wonder why, from a collectible point of view, cal. 5000 is not having same success ref. 5441 had (this is not a point of my interest, but still…), nevertheless they are both limited editions.

Just to be clear, I like both references but my question hides something personal, some of you might know I’m evolving towards vintage tastes and so…

Vintage and contemporary oriented opinions are very welcome, thank you!

    Regards,

    Roberto

The differences you outline are real....

and it is easy to just leave it at that. But I love the curve of the plexiglass and there are many who also like the subtle differences in the dial on the 5000. I got the 5001 because I liked the silver/white dial better. But if I had desired the black dial I probably would have opted for the 5000.

    Fairy tale versus reality?

I always considered the 5000 like a dream, not quite real, whereas the 5001 is very matter-of-fact. If you only look at specifications, you would choose the 5001, but the 5000 is a silent, romantic beauty. A lot has to do with the plexi glass, with its mysterious effect. I was so happy when the VC series showed a Portuguese with a sapphire glass curved like the plexi glass, making it look so really vintage. I wonder what would happen if the 5001 would get such a glass: reality and fairy tale all at once?

    Kind regards,

Hi Roberto, I like the questions and own a 5001...

.....but I don't cosider the 5001 'collectable', it is a mass produced yet FANTASTIC watch.

I'm like others I guess, the 5001 (ardoise) just apealled more to me. The movement upgrade etc. really are not important for me, to the contrary, I prefer 18k 'slow-beaters' because they sound so great!
Having said that, I love the 5000 for its plexi-glass and I also find the blued (!) hands (seconds & power reserve) VERY attractive. I only think the embossed dial is not so perfect as on the Jubilee.

Your other question, why the Jubilee turned out much more valuable, is also interesting but I can't answer I'm afraid. The 5441 has maybe a more 'special' movement, is a very understated watch but also closest to the original Portuguese!
The 5000 is a more modern reincarnation with all the goodies like automatic (7 day!!!!) movement.
Maybe value is driven by most common taste?

    Thanks for starting this post!

    Regards,

    Bob

    I love the calibre 5000 >

and find it's dial much more attractive and balenced then the 5001.

    It's up to you....

The plain cal. 5000 of course has more collectable and historic value for a collector It is a limited edition to celebrate the greatness of the most original model line of IWC, IMHO. Even though, I think it can handle regularly use without any problem. Ask Nad, he has the platinum version.

The 5001 is more practical / functional version, but it retains the allure from the Port. 2000.

So, the question is which one goes more with you. If you consider your self a true collector and you have a lot of other elegant watches to pick up for any occasion.... go for the Port. 2000. But if you want to use regularly the watch at the office without the fear of scratch the Plexiglas and you consider your self more a practical watch lover than a serious collector…. Go for the 5001.

I made my choice based on the criteria explained above

    Hmmm...difficult choice/questions...

The 2000 is in many ways comparable to the 5001 IMHO in that they both represent modern interpretations of the same watch. I would welcome the opportunity to acquire a 2000 if it ever presented itself purely on the basis of it's limited availability and not so much because it is vintage or I like it more than my 5001.

The 5441 on the other hand is a very different story....I simply love it's looks. Timeless, pure, and elegant design. The premium is debatable...may well be worth it, or one can argue, the 2000 is undervalued.

    Cheers,
    Evan

Dial color and date make a difference

I really like the white dial and blued hands on my 'current' Portuguese Automatic. The date display is a nice plus but that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

    It's a historic watch...

Given the 5000 or the 5441, I would take the latter. Nevertheless, a Panda 5000 would always be an important addition to my collection. I have never seen one for sale at the right time.
