I'm a newbie at this forum, since I have recently purchased a vintage 1961 cal 8531 Automatic. I'm quite happy with this watch, but I have to admit that it did stop running two times now.
Would this be because the 'automatic'system of this older watch isn't reliable anymore, or would it be likely that the watch has to be winded more often?

The winding system of Cal 8531 is very efficient and should keep the watch running after it's initial winding of 10 to 20 turn of the crown to get it going.
Sounds like it's time for a service.

Maybe it is time for a service. It is possible that the oils have dried out.
