    Greetings, all.

I am the proud owner of a new Portuguese, Reference 3714, that I recently purchased from a local AD in Bellevue, WA, USA.

I have a couple of questions and perhaps someone on the forum can answer them.

    1. Does it cause excessive wear to the movement if I run the chronograph function frequently or even constantly?

    2. Conversely, should I run the chronograph function a minimal amount of time on a regular basis to ensure effective lubrication of the movement?

Thanks in advance for any input you may have on this subject.

    Regards

    Gary

    some answers

    Hi Gary,

First off, congratulations on your 3714 --an absolute classic.

There's some discussions about this in the archived posts, but to give you some answers and opinions:

    1. It will not hurt the watch to have the chrono running, although it may somewhat slightly shorten service interval times. Some companies (Patek, for example) don't recommend it, but a chrono really is only (a) an additional seconds hand with (b) a counter mechnicsm and (c) a start-stop device. Using it won't ruin your watch,

    2. However, runing it does require a little more power, which means that time accuracy (timekeeping) may be very slightly off, since the watch is regulated for a non-chrono use. (By the way, that shouldn't apply to the cal. 89360 used in the Da Vinci and some other models).

    3. With modern lubricants there's no need to periodically use the chrono, but using it --say--once a year might be helpful.

    Regards,
    Michael
