reached a dead end..Pics in that thread if you are interested.
I have a 8521 from 1956 with a 35 mm gold screw back case from 1957.
Maybe a catalogue from around 1957 could help me? Can anyone help?

The old catalogs do not show all variants of a Ref. (reference) number.
Variations in the same reference can be the
- Material (steel or 18 k gold)
- Dial (shape pan pie /flat) and markers
- With or without date (for automatic movements only) -> A or AD (Automatic
or Automatic&Date)
My first intention was, when I saw the picture: the crown is not original.
The reference which was shown in the othe Thread is most probable a 18k Ref
596 AD
As ref 596 A(D) is indicated as as "extra-dicht" (~waterproof) and has a screw
back, it should have a fish on the crown.

Not sure the 596 was screwback Ralph...certainly a puzzle this one.
In 1957 the waterproof case was a new feature, and specially marked in the
catalog only for few watches as the "Ingineur" wich had the same indication.
In addition the ingenieur had the inner soft iron case which has nothing to do
with tighthening the case.
It was also a feature making the watch case a bit thicker due to the thread
for the screwed back.
Maybe others can find early references marke "extra-dicht" and check it thy
have screwed backs.

In the 60's then probably Watches with a fish without screw back could have
followed.

The puzzle could lye with the casemaker, at some point in time there must have
been a transition from screwback to heavy snapback...schaffhausen have used
different dial, different casebacks styles and different mvmnt types in the
past whilst sticking to a ref...which would suggest the only thing left would
be a case middle that denotes the ref.
596 may well be the ref..the screwback caseback being by the by.
