    [b]PRESS RELEASE

The new Ingenieur Automatic is the most classic Ingenieur model in the current collection. Elegant, functional and conscious of its tradition, it consistently reflects the design elements defined by legendary watch designer Gérald Genta.

Of all the watches in the 2013 Ingenieur collection, the Ingenieur Automatic (Ref. IW323902, IW323904, IW323906) in stainless steel is the model that most visibly reflects the features typically associated with this watch family. The watch, with its three hands, has a timeless, clear-cut design. The conspicuous bores in the bezel were the brainchild of watch designer Gérald Genta. In the case of the legendary Ingenieur SL unveiled in 1976, he placed the five functional holes directly on the bezel, where they originally served to hold it firmly in position. The bores, the entire structure of the case and the logo, incorporating the stylized bolt of light- ning, soon became the hallmarks of the Ingenieur family.

PROTECTION AGAINST MAGNETIC FIELDS UP TO 40,000 AMPERES PER METRE

Because of its low case height, the Ingenieur Automatic is fitted with the slim, automatic 30110-calibre movement. Water-resistant to 12 bar, the case also accommodates a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. This technical feature was responsible for the watch family’s name, because in the 1950s engineers, who were often exposed to magnetic fields in the course of their work, were among the potential buyers of the original Ingenieur from IWC Schaffhausen. In order to guarantee protection against magnetic fields, the inner back plate, casing ring and dial are made of soft iron, which conducts magnetic flux lines around the movement. The protection provided – up to 40,000 amperes per metre – is more than eight times the minimum required by the Swiss standard for antimagnetic watches. Despite its elegant appearance, the Ingenieur Automatic is robust and ideally equipped for everyday use.

CLEAR-CUT FUNCTIONALITY DOWN TO THE LAST DETAIL

With a case measuring just 10 millimetres in height and 40 millimetres in diameter, the Ingenieur Automatic is equally well suited to a slimmer wrist. The slightly chamfered bezel features an integrated step, the overall effect being to make the watch look slimmer. All the surfaces of the case feature a matte finish. The various edges, most of which are pol- ished, underscore the watch’s simple elegance. The chunky, screw-in crown is generously sized and shielded by solid protective shoulders. The raised inner circle on the dial has exactly the same radius as the hour hand, while the minute hand circumscribes the middle section with its purist hour markers. The central seconds hand extends as far as the outer chapter ring. Here, too, we find clarity and function- ality down to the last detail, qualities underscored by the date window at “3 o’clock”. The Ingenieur Automatic is available with a silver-plated or black dial. The silver-plated version comes with rhodium-plated or rose-gold-plated hands and appliqués, while the rhodium-plated hands and appliqués form an attractive contrast to the black dial. The watch is fitted with a solid stainless-steel bracelet. A black rubber strap with a pin buckle is also available on request.

I know a number of collectors who will be very happy to see 40mm watches as an option.

Great information Shing ! The ing chrono which has " ALAN " written all over it is a very attractive piece. It seems this one will be using the 89361 calibre , what about its dimensions ...?

Swell! My checkbook is now hiding in the corner whimpering.

Seriously, thank you Shing. The stainless steel variations look like possibly great choices for a "go anywhere, do anything" watch.

    And I love that chronograph.

I think IWC completed with these new 40mm Ingenieurs, this cross-collections target, to propose something I'd name "Junior line", a sort of offering for entry-level watch-fans, with these specifications:

    1) Average case size (good for men and women)
    2) ETA/Sellita movement
    3) Price above competitors' offering in the same segment

Am I far from the truth?

Junior line, yikes! Sounds like a name for a boy's first watch.
Surprisingly I like the brown dial version and Alan's favourite. At 10mm thick it's wearable in just about all circumstances. If these are being previewed here, and if Shing has not done a spoiler for IWC it begs the question as to what is being announced at SIHH?
Anyway these are nice but I would still like to see a 40mm 666 style Ingie, in other words less ruftytufty style. Both designs I feel have a place and both could sell.

Just when I was about to tame my urge to collect another IWC....

    Thanks for sharing, Shing.

Even-though the brown dial version seems to win my vote here, but I think the 40mm SS will stand a chance to be a very popular model. The classy can't-go-wrong looks, entry level specification, smaller size and presumably a lower price range will appeal to the wider audience.

I agree with Roberto. for want of a better description, ref 3239s can be called the 'junior line' for now. here are my further wishes:

the brown and black ?ceramic? pieces - I am hoping they do not exceed 42.5 mm in diameter.

the last sensationally silver dial with light blue accents, is the IWC Mercedes Petronas collaboration I think - clearly with calibre 89361, looking at the 12 o'clock counter, so I think this is highly likely to be 45.5 mm, consistent with the other cal 89361 Ingenieur models.

the bracelet - something new ? I would love if the polish was superbly brushed and finished.

    again, these are my wishes.

@Greg - I am sure there are other wondrous pieces that will be revealed at SIHH - or rather on the Sunday/Monday before SIHH begins proper. this year, hanging out in Zurich just prior to SIHH with a couple of forummers, only Larry had access while we were thrashing around Zurich. not making the same mistake next year !

looking forward to catching the many forummers in Geneva in a matter of 7 weeks - although a painful seven weeks they will be :)

Trying to better explain. "Junior Line" doesn't meant to be diminishing, it simply easily recalls the case dimension and the entry level target.

    Another consideration.

This one could be a good choice for CFIII - imo.
