Last week marked the 60th anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) of The Queen’s current reign of Great Britain.

As part of these celebrations, Her Royal Majesty bestowed upon her loyal subjects two extra public holidays. The Jubilee week was therefore a fitting time for celebration and merriment of everything British.

So... an absolutely perfect time for our annual visit....

    to GREECE!

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/map-greece.gif

Greece is a stunningly beautiful country, and for those who come to visit— it is famous for its thousands of wonderful islands. The most popular being Santorini, Mykonos, Paxos, Kefalonia, Crete, etc.

However, parts of the mainland are just as beautiful— and often times much less crowded.

This year would take us back to the Macedonian / Northern Greece region... it’s most famous former resident a certain Alexander the Great.

More specifically we would be going to the Halkidiki region, onto Kassandra (one of the ‘three-fingered’ land masses—the others being Sithonia and Athos). See arrow above.

    Leaving from London’s Gatwick Airport:

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/iwcbp3.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1608.jpg

Arriving at Thessaloniki Airport (Greece’s second largest city)

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1615.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1611.jpg

We managed to catch a fantastic tail-wind—so flight time from London only 2.75 hours. Followed by a 45 minute drive down south... and here we are by the pool ready for a week of much needed R&R.

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/photo2.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/photo1.jpg

Yes, an Aquatimer or Yacht Club would have been much more fitting for a brief sun-trip... but oh well, maybe some other day (not sure about you, but I've got a long IWC wish-list!).

Time to dig into some Greek delicacies:

    Halloumi Cheese & Calamari
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1856.jpg

Shrimps in a Feta Cheese & Tomato Sauce
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1857.jpg

Moussaka (an aubergine (eggplant) dish with minced meat, bechamel sauce, potatoes, peppers, onions)
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1858.jpg

    Swordfish Steaks
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1705.jpg

The nearby marina had lots of fancy yachts...

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1883.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1850.jpg

including an American one from Delaware... now that's a long trip!

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1838.jpg

Sorry folks, no visit to any IWC ADs here...

But there were these watches being sold in a shop. I think they were having a 2-for-1 special... LOL...

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/photo4.jpg

Greece is all about the beaches, so many to choose from:

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1884.jpg

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1737.jpg

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1734.jpg

Who says we weren’t thinking of the Queen during her jubilee?...

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/7326946880_74e1522608_k.jpg

    Beautiful scenery/greenery:

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1704.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1703.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1702.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1895.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1897.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1840.jpg

Okay, a week of Greek cuisine (or any cuisine) can get a bit monotonous. Thankfully there was some nearby Italian.

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1887.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1800.jpgi1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1717.jpg

    And also some decent Japanese:

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1762.jpgi1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1764.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1768.jpg

My favourite Japanese dessert is their ice cream flavour ‘matcha’ or green-tea...

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/greentea.jpg
It’s this dessert which makes me have a great affinity for Nelson's Zegg & Cerlati Big Pilot — look at the matcha powder on the ice cream above... it's a perfect colour match!!!

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/greenteabigpilot-1.jpg

    Anyways back to the pool
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/iwcbp5.jpg
    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/iwcbp4.jpg

and then lunch on the beach
(well, my wife's lunch... as I'm a 'grass is for cows' type of guy) LOL...

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1743x.jpg

Heading to the bar for some sunset drinks.

    Final photo...

enjoying the glorious Greek sunset with my Big Pilot...

    i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q562/teeveetee9/Halkidiki%20Big%20Pilot%202012/IMG_1771x-.jpg

And that’s it folks. Sorry no landmark / touristy shots (and there are certainly numerous sites / monasteries to see not too far away...) this trip was all about relaxing (and eating as you can see!). =)

Thanks for viewing. Hope your summers have started off well too.

    Regards,
    Thang

What a beautiful place! I will visit there in August, and already am excited to go.

I think I'll bring two watches: a Galapagos Aquatimer for the sun, water and beaches and a Portuguese Pure Classic for evenings. I think that might be the perfect IWC travel pair for the Aegean.

Thang, you have no idea how close you have been my friend to my birthplace during your stay in Halkidiki, if only I knew, anyway let's hope you are visiting again in the near future. On the food, I would go for the black cod miso myself.
Glad you had such a great time.

    Thang,

What a great travelogue? I enjoyed reading it. It brings back great memory of my previous Greece visit over 20 years ago. I spent some time in Thessaloniki, Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. I met many friendly Greek and love the beautiful islands.

Your BP and food photos are amazing too.

Thang, great post of a fantastic location, country and people who know all about friendship, hospitality and fine food - as your photos attest!

Now, it could have been that our friend Argiris popped up in the background in one of those posts - his old stomping grounds.

    thanks for sharing with us.
