A little story for the watch affectionados...and not sure if this is the place for this. Here goes:

Almost 4 years ago, I was fortunate enough to begin my IWC journey with a Yacht Club chronograph. I was certain that I would be a 'one watch' man and the Yacht Club would remain with me till the end of my time...until last week.

I recently visited an authorised dealer with my brother-in-law who is considering purchasing an Aquatimer. Whilst waiting for him to mull over his selection, I decided to try on the Big Pilot. I immediately entered tunnel vision mode, emotions overtook logic and the only thing playing through my mind was 'I WANT THIS WATCH!!!' I can't even recall what the sales advisor was saying to me, I was mesmerised!

Back home and trying to get back to reality, I'm now trying to decide whether I should adopt a second watch into my family.

I have a feeling that I am about to enter into watch obsession territory...!

Any view on the Big Pilot would be greatly appreciated.

The wise answer would be: wait a few weeks to see what happens. If the emotions stay, buy. I often do this, but I also bought one or two watches right away. Why is this wise? There are a few watches that I loved to pieces on first sight, but after a few weeks that feeling was gone. To me it would have been a pity to have spent money on a watch that on the longer run leaves me indifferent. But I quite understand your emotions, have fun with them!

    Kind regards,
    Paul

not sure why you have bothered to post... it's simply too late. the IWC-virus has taken a little bit longer than usual in your case, but it's hopeless now.

also, with very good reasons has the big pilot become an iconic watch... big, bold and beautiful. (not to mention the legendary pellaton winding system)

and what a one-two complimentary punch it would make with your yacht club.

speaking on behalf of many of us here, we look forward to your reveal!

    regards,
    thang

This is exactly the right advice! Just wait...

This whole post is gold. The intro literally made me laugh out loud and the presumptuous sign-off is classic.

More seriously, I'd echo Paul's advice and wait. But this is coming from a guy in the same position as yourself so my perspective is not the same as a collector... yet.

Sorry, I am probably one of the worst to give advice on following a mood to buy a watch ;)
The BP is an iconic watch, so grab one, you will never regret it.

Wait? For what? Buy the BP! Life is short. :-). Just my two cents.

    Cheers,

The classic watch bug and IWC virus symptoms for which there is no cure. Now you have to learn to deal with it.
What most of us - who are all in the same situation - try to do is keep it somehow under control which can mean:
    [ul]
[li]Don't buy an IWC every day[/li]
[li]Don't buy an IWC every week[/li]
[li]Don't buy an IWC every month[/li]
    [/ul]
OK - the latter starts to get difficult for quite some of us ;-)

So anybody has to find a way to deal with it: convince their partner, raise the funds, sell something else for it ...
However, in the end it is a wonderful addiction.

Seriously spoken: The Big Pilot is a great watch! If you really want it, you'll go for it anyway. Enjoy yourself and we'd be happy to see you back here.

PS: I myself are a one watch man at the moment with a wonderful Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph but I'm working on a solution to fix that. Have another dream watch as well. :-)

    Gents

Thank you for your kind feedback. Yes I think that the IWC virus has struck...I will definitely wait a few weeks to see how things settle before I make my decision. The morning after my posting and the virus is definitely in full effect...

I shall update you with details should my decision be a favourable one!

A few weeks can be difficult with the virus brewing. See if staring at these photos below helps at all (assuming it's the 5004/9 strain)...

Sigh! I remember when I thought I was a one watch man! The Big Pilot is a great watch and you have logged onto to a site that features "enablers greatest hits" when it comes to purchasing IWC watches! LOL!

    Hi Doc,
Don't expect logical or rational advice on this forum of enablers!
We love to see pictures and the BP is a fantastic choice so go on - make us happy. You know you want to.

No pressure, none at all ;-)

I am quite liking this strain of virus...the infectious responses on this forum are definitely inspiring!

I think a Monday visit to the local IWC boutique is in order. Whilst I consider my next move, I see no harm in trying the watch on once again!

    Will keep you posted :-)

Come on Thang, give him a break. These pictures are killing if you are severely infected and then there is only one possible (temporarily) cure.... you know it, we all know it.... resistance is futile....
