THE FIRST OF 25...........

A week ago the last so called Schützenuhr, made by IWC, was shown here. It was the one of Thun, issued in 1995.
More than a century before ((1890), IWC produced its first Schützenuhr for the city of Frauenfeld, Switzerland..

.....I guess collectors of Schützenuhren are charmed more by their cases than by their movements. The movements are from the normal production line and do not have special complications or outstanding performance....

...The cases are beatifully decorated, carved and engraved. As such unique pieces of art only dedicated to one event. This watch has a cal. 52 movement, used in about half of the 25 different Schützenuhren. All these watches have been described by Reinard Meis in his reference book. Unfortunately this book has only been published in German language...

...I had the luck that Rolf Birkenkämper wrote me today about the thread of "Schützenuhren" on the Forum. Rolf Birkenkämper can be considered as one of the most important IWC collectors of P.W.'s in the world. Together with the late Friedrich Wagener, Hans-Georg Aberle, Thomas Koenig and Ralph Ehrismann, he can be considered as an IWC expert on the early watches.
Rolf has sent to me a picture of the Frauenfeld Schützenuhr original box.
The Frauenfeld Uhr was the first Schützenuhr made by IWC in 1890.
There are no pictures of this box in the reference literature. I hear you say : no big deal and yes, it is not the most important image of the world. But it is unique and you will never see one again!

...Another extreme rare IWC Schützenuhr was brought to my attention by Rolf Birkenauer : The 1899 Baden ( near Vienna) IX Niederösterreichises Landesschiessen : the 9th shooting competition in lower Austria 1899. Rolf permitted me to show this watch on the Forum.
The Meis book does not reveal a lot about the figures ,depicted on this rare watch. On one side a gentleman with huge moustache is depicted : Erzherzog Rainer Protektor ( Archduke Border Protector).
