to answer your question, three very basic things gripped me and remain deeply rooted in my collecting palette since. in chronological order...
the incredibly clear white or silver dial design that to me so personifies the 'less is more' aesthetic high-road...

and minutes after that first love-at-first-sight moment, the incredible case polishing...

which one year later I would be informed by Schaffhausen personnel that there is a saying 'an IWC can be recognized by its side' because of this distinctive polish patterning, which is the result & effect of a material invented by IWC and a well-known US manufacturer.
and as I found out more about the brand, I came to appreciate even more of its ingenuity in design, and clever movement inventions...
