a winning simplicity...I ask myself if such a great dial would attract less attention than a dial with many complications??
    really a beautiful time machine..
    enjoy it

This is quite an interesting question. I think it implies that it is a good thing that a watch or a dial attracts attention, and that the watch or dial that attracts more attention than another watch or dial is to be preferred. A question that accompanies the issue is, whose attention is attracted, like the owner's attention, or someone else's attention. When I asked a colleague the other day whether he got a new watch, he answered with quite some satisfaction: no, but it is quite noticeable, isn't it.

It is quite possible that the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar or the ceramic Da Vinci Chrono attract more attention from my colleagues and friends than the rose gold Vintage Collection Portuguese or the here shown Jubilee would. I am not sure whether I, would I own one of latter mentioned watches, would mind.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

hmmm. for me the emotional connection I make on first sight of the watch (in large part the dial) is the primary factor. this emotional connection tended to be stronger with watches that had more complications, but this certainly is no longer true - case in point being my first IWC 500114 which had such a strong clear face that I simply could not shake it off. I certainly used to think simple faces meant for less aesthetically pleasing (even less valuable) timepieces but what with the pics of vintage watches u guys have posted, and having tried my first IWC vintage a few weeks ago - man, its such a mind-job ! my smaller wrist size also accommodates the vintage pieces readily. finally, a variety of complicated, and basic, dials makes for wonderful time-piece selection every morning, depending on my mood & that day's activity.

where attention by others is concerned, my own experience has taught me the reactions can be as diverse as there are kinds of pple depending on the level of horology-interest they have, or those with a more modern-mechanistic preference, or more aesthetically/classically-refined taste - and then there are those who insist that the timepieces just has to be state spell-bindingly clearly that "oh, its an IWC (or what have you)".

its all interesting feedback but i pay more attention to them if its a considered opinion - one derived from comparison and a deeper inner opinion or conclusion based on time spent with timepieces. one big exception however that I still do to this date - which is the seek out a circle of friends for the intuitive gut immediate first impression on a timepiece I am considering - these first impressions frequently make me re-consider & re-evaluate a timepiece especially on the question on "how it will complement my daily activity", because to me my watches inevitably fits into my daily lifestyle, and complements my persona / mindset in that activity, whatever it may be.

complications are great...and looking at the dial of a perpetual calendar for example...hmmm..of course I think myself...that's a next climax to wish for...but then you see something like this jubileum model or the new portuguese hand wound, single color dial (I tried the white in ZH last Saturday..) and then you simply tell yourself...it's simple, it's clean, it's classic, it's really aristocratic..in simple words...who needs more??
and that's of course my very private opinion..
