The bracelet on my 3239 occasionally makes a screeching noise. It's not a big problem but I'm considering applying some lubricating oil on it. Would that be a good idea or a bad idea?

Bad, unless you don't wear long sleeve shirts nor mind a well lubricated wrist!

Try some graphite from a pencil.

My Mission Earth Strap does the same thing.

...and then you will be obliged to wear black shirts for a few months :-)

There may some grit and dirt embedded in the links. I use a bit of non abrasive toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean it under running water.
That often dislodges the offending dirt.

    Hi Bill,
Toothpaste is very abrasive and can leave deposits in the links causing unnecessary wear. I would recommend a toothbrush, liquid hand soap (which is gentle) and running water to clean up the links of a bracelet.

@Mark, I agree. That's why I said non abrasive toothpaste. Hand soap will work as well.

Liquid soap is PH neutral so it's the perfect cleaner for bracelets and the watch case-I've cleaned my watches this way for a long time now, without any issues.A soft toothbrush as others have mentioned is perfect for the job. Finish by using soft tissues to absorb the excess water, before a final clean with a soft micro fibre cloth that you would use for cleaning the lenses on spectacles.

Just a brief update in case someone else is experiencing a similar problem.

Cleaning the bracelet provided some temporary relief but the noise kept coming back and getting worse. I eventually located the problem to be where the bracelet attaches to the case at the 12 o'clock position. I took the watch to my AD as I thought maybe there was some uneveness that needed a touch of polishing. Their watchmaker applied some lubrication where the bracelet attaches to the case and it has been noise free since.

Thank you for the tip. I have exactly same problem with a noise in the bracelet. I had better take it to the AD.

I use liquid soap and soft tooth-brush too, but never needed the micro-fibre cloth at the end.
On some rare occasions at the watchmaker he can do an ultrasound bath for the bracelet and that does the job too. And/or to take the bracelet pieces apart and clean them one by one.

Nice excercise ! and to balance the awsome selection listed above down a bit, i would be very happy with an aquatimer vintage, and the beautiful Portuguese PC in steel.
