As always follow the thread, I think you will enjoy Jack Freedman's response.

How do Forum members feel about the dial engraving today?

    Cheers from the cellar

    Had missed that post...

Thanks cellar for helping us recall that sometimes (and I begin to understand that it is not so rare an occasion) that even MF does not agree with everything coming out of Schaffhausen. Fortunately, lately they seem to be "keeping on his right side" :~)

Thank you for this intriguing tour >

I must admit this kind of engravings are not my favorite though.

A nice excercise and surely a masterpiece but the result makes the overall look of the dial, combined with gold, heavier, just personal tastes. It would have been different if the figures had an animated function, let's say in a minute repeater.

The story of the stubborn father anh his struggle to have an extra limited edition is very touching.

    Thank you Greg,

    Regards,

    roberto

I had no idea about this model and a very nice story too even without the happy ending.

    Special watch, and limited editions

The original Da Vinci, having a peculiar feminine look to me, never was a favourite of mine, despite the fabulous perpetual calendar. But this gold one is very special, though not for us down to earth Dutchmen.

As I understand, if an AD buys a series of watches, he can shape them into a unique special edition. Even a small series of twelve watches could be done, if you pay the right amount of money. That very rich father could have considered this construction, although he would probably not get a Quatro Stagioni. But there are enough themes to choose from. He then would have a spare ten watches, for his grand children.

    Kind regards,
Paul, wearing naturally limited rose gold VC Portuguese

Very interesting dial, although it would not be my choice as every day watch :-)

    Dealers can't dictate limited editions

It's much more complicated that one dealer ordering 12 watches. Certain models qualify for editions under certain criteria, and sometimes the "negotiations" are individualized. Just offering a given amount of money doesn't do it --much depends on the dealer's status, production goals, etc.

    Regards,
    Michael

I'm not aware of a white gold version...

... but there was a later version of the Da Vinci also with an engraved dial. Please follow the link below.

Perhaps this is what Michael was thinking of.

    Cheers from the cellar
