One of the most important remembrances of SIHH is the opportunity to spend time with Herr Klaus. He is a total gentlemen, who is willing to spend an incredible amount of time with you each time you meet. Our conversations ranged from the history and tradition of the PPC, to his beloved wife and children, and to his whippets, which are often seen in and around Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen. I will always treasure meeting him, speaking with him, and getting his autograph for my small collection of IWC memorabilia. Thanks to both MF and IWC for giving each of us the opportunity to have this experience.

The second impression that I cannot get out of my mind is the WG PPC. It is stunningly beautiful. When you get a chance to see it, rush to your AD and see for your self.

Bill, is the color of the WG PPC

similar to the Laureus or darker? The pictures look darker and deeper blue, but lighting can change things. How did it look in real life?

    No,

It is not the Laureus blue. It is a deeper, more luminance blue that is just wonderful. Pictures can't capture the difference. I have the Laureus Chrono and the PPC will make a great blue teammate.

Bill, you have good taste, but on that blue dial...

...it is nice, but just pretty. To me, it's not materially better than the rose gold perpetual or several others. It's a great watch for someone who doesn't own any IWC perpetual, but it's not that much better that your current one. I frankly consider the WG-blue dial perpetual to be "old wine in a new bottle" and just wish that it were more horologically interesting. In fact, I wish that more of the 2010 novelties involved engineering accomplishments and movement Innovations (stated as a constructive criticism).

The reason I say this is not to put down your taste --as stated, the white gold/blue dial perpetual does have a very pretty dial. But rather,as a friend, I am saying that in my opinion you may be making a bit of mistake.

Keep your current perpetual, which is absolutely classic and beautiful, and think instead about a watch (a) you don't have and (b) which reflects IWC's horolological foundation . The two that come to mind are the new Yacht Club or, in my biased opinion, the CF Da Vinci which serves as testimony both to IWC's first in-house chronograph (which is a horologhical first) as well as this forum.

    Regards,
    Michael

    Fantastic Bill, Question for you...

What a personal thrill and delight to meet and talk with Mr. Klaus.

With regard to your close encounter with the White Gold PPC 5021 - is the shape of the case around the bezel, an including the bezel similar to the new ref 5023 - which seem to have an "inverse shape" compared to the 5021 and 5022. I'd call it concave versus convex if that makes sense.

    Can you comment on that?

Many thanks. Enjoy your ski trip.

    Good points, Fortunately I have

a little time to let any decisions roll around in my head. I certainly agree with you on the RG PPC and it will never leave my collection. The YC is certainly a real contender.

It is great to have so many different and wonderful options to consider. Imho, IWC's 2010 introductions really surpassed other years in the number of fantastic items to consider.

Thanks for your insights. I can let my brain do some subliminal work while skiing in Zermatt this week,

    Cheers,

    Bill

    Perhaps a Ref 5024 with a Tourbillon?

... or throw a retrograde display for seconds hand on it....

    Now you're talking Michael.

    There is a difference, but..

I don't know if I can remember enough to comment. MF? My dinner partner one evening was Mario Klein who was involved in the PPC implementation and he spoke about the crystal and bezel design issues they faced.

Sorry, but my old memory does not recall the details enough to give you a good insight.

    There is a difference, but..

Well, Bill, Looks like the ole devil is right behind you and pushing hard. A very pretty piece. BTW if you get too tempted-before you find a good divorce lawyer-perhaps I could offer my services to patch up your marriage. Of course we'd have to settle on a payment arrangement...Let's see, which IWC do you have that I have had an eye on for awhile...

Dick, that colour looks most like...

...the blue used for the 2nd Aquatimer COUSTEAU, which was the first Chronograph edition if you recall!

So NOT the first (non-chrono) Cousteau with the blue sunray dial but the 2nd edition (with the piece Calypso wood on the back).

    Best regards,

    Bob
