It was announced today that IWC Schaffhausen continues its partnership with the Volvo Ocean Race and will be the Official Timekeeper for the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. At the same time, IWC will be on board as second time sponsor of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. The Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 starts on 4 October 2014 in Alicante, Spain and leads the competing teams around the globe until the race comes to an end in Gothenburg, Sweden on 27 June 2015.

IWC also producec an exclusive announcement video to kick off the new race, which you can see at youtu.be/-WCwpVliC-4

Any bets or ideas for a second Volvo Ocean Race IWC watch?

Thank you Michael, great news! Personally, I would like to see an Ingenieur as Volvo Ocean Race watch but since 2014 is the year of the Aquatimer, that would be a more logic choice, also since there have already been Plastiki Ingenieurs in the past.

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

Looking forward to the race already !

in analogy with the Ingenieur carbon, why not a Aquatimer in carbon, since carbon is not only used is F1 cars, but also in racing yachts.

If I remember right, any special editions could be issued one year after re-launch of the certain line only. So, I think it should be something with Inge. It was 2 versions of Plastiki, it could be something for Volvo Ocean Race as well.

I guess a special Ingenieur Chronograph. Not an Aquatimer, as those on the boat will most of the time look at the water, not swim in it. Swimming while on the Volvo Ocean Race might kill you.

    Kind regards,

That's a very smart idea Tonny, weight savings on these boats is a big issue. They even cut their toothbrushes in half just to save a few grams! Eleven crew members with a huge steel Ingenieur would add about 2 kg, that's quite a lot of toothbrushes!

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

I remember looking at the 1st VOR Yacht Club and thinking nahhhh. I have since changed my mind on that. Will be interesting to see what is released.

I love my YC VOR Jarrod -and a Portuguese YC in titanium with a carbon dial is and will always be the perfect VOR watch if you ask me :-)

For the next race though I think an Ingenieur in carbon fiber would be pretty cool though, based on the new 3224!

I bet you do. And I would love to have one in my collection now!!

I think an AT of some description would be fitting. Whatever it is will be interesting.

11 crew members, global long distance race, exact time/day/date/year required, focus on lightweight materials and charted navigation a must,...what the heck...give them all Siderale's in carbon or Ti. Should they drift off course, perfect watch to navi by the stars.

Team NZ wouldn't need them, they never drift off course. :-)

I hope some of these predictions will be correct. An Aquatimer model would be great. To continue with the carbin fibre dial would be a good idea.

The Portuguese is the quintessential sailors' watch from IWC and I could not imagine a current watch from any other line being created as a special edition to commemorate this race. I loved the first edition and that is why I own one. I probably would not buy a second edition unless the changes were quite substantial but I still do not see a Volvo Ocean Race watch being created from a collection other than the Portuguese Yacht Club. Could there be another deviation/recreation of a previous collection on the works?

Ben, I totally agree on that. Portuguese Yacht Club should be the one! Material? Carbon as earlier posted here!

I think in reality, a watch on the wrist of a participant in the Volvo ocean race will have to be just as water tight, if not more, than a diver's watch several fathoms under the surface and certainly very shock proof. A resurrection of an IWC deck watch might be nice but with GPS based navigational systems, a mechanical watch in such an event is about as relevant as a mechanical watch near a Formula 1 track. From a marketing point of view, there are Portuguese, Aquatimer and Ingenieur opportunities. In the fullness of time we'll hear more.

I'd go with a classic, a YC, but this time in bronze... I would love to see that on a YC!
