    Hi guys,

one of my friend has this nice pocket watch but we are not sure what caliber is it. He also claims that it should be made in 1891 (when types serial number here: www.mikrolisk.de/show.php?site=206)
What do you think the caliber and a year production could be?

    Hi Midloch,

You are correct, the year is 1891 and it is a calibre IWC, 19 ligne lepine.
The calibre IWC is a forerunner of the calibre 52.
There are others on the forum more experienced than I in the calibre 52 family who could give you more information.

    Hi Midloch,
If you interprete the comment of Saltuarius as it should, your watch is not cal 52 but a forerunner. The forerunners of cal. 52 were Cal. Elgin III and cal. "IWC".
The major difference ,immediately visible, is the shape of the threequarter plate.
All forerunners had a threequarter plate with a semi-circular cut away nearby the balance wheel. In the cal. 52 watches this cut away is not semi-circular but has a smooth "S" shape. There are more difference such as the fixation screws of the 2 big winding wheels and the pallet cock or bridge.
There is an article published on the Forum of which Ralph Ehrismann is the pricipal author, but I cannot find it searching the archives.
    Kind regards,
    Adrian,
    (alwaysiwc).
