I think there are several under appreciated IWC watches- what I mean is a model that is really special in lots of ways, but it not 'on' the radar for many people. Here is one I believe is special in a lot of ways, but under the radar for lots of collectors.

This won't surprise anyone but I think this one is underrated.

Great idea for a thread Nelson!
I think my much loved, but seldom mentioned GST Chrono is under appreciated

When this watch was announced as the second Collectors' Forum watch, it was an understatement to say many were underwhelmed. I can only account for under twenty sold. But I think the CFDV with its gold hands and markers is beautiful in its own right and is great addition to any collection.

    Great thread!

I thought the Jones Portuguese were great. I believe they represented the very first use of what was then referred to as the in-house "Jones" movement. While I felt the platinum was the most attractive, I couldn't afford it but bought the RG and SS, which IWC kindly provided with matching numbers.

This model never seemed to get much buzz, and has quietly disappeared with little presence that I have seen in aftermarket sales.

I must say, that "under appreciated" is not such an interesting concept when it comes to the watches one owns. The question has to be asked: by whom? As long as the answer is not "by oneself" there is no problem.

Without it being my goal to buy under appreciated watches, I have the feeling that I quite often like watches that other people don't find interesting or beautiful. But so what? It is me who has to better like my watches, and I do. Having under appreciated watches make them more seldomly seen in the wild than for instance the iconic Big Pilot, but even that isn't too interesting to me.

Here you see two of my under appreciated pilot's watches.

The Worldtimer, the best one for its money, I am sure. Discontinued now, my advice: get one as long as you can.

    i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj79/BloemenPA/image_zps71b2c6e5.jpg

The Vintage Collection Pilot's Watch, with its beautifully ribbed bezel: it looks amazing on the wrist.

Nice post Nelson, but I wouldn't call you 3705 under appreciated as much as I would call it under the radar. It's one of the "noble" pieces of a bygone era and there are probably many now who didn't even know it existed. Love the patina, love the watch!

    Thanks

    Terry

Nelson - this reminds me, do you still have your 1st edition Cousteau with the polished sides?

Good question. I have several under appreciated vintage IWCs. These three come to mind.
    i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii236/costadaguia/FullSizeRender-1_zpsrwqckgoi.jpg
    and so do these two.

Hi Ben. Yes, I still have it. You have reminded me about that- some had polished sides, some had brushed- but I do not remember any details. Do you?
    Anybody?

    Hi Nelson.

I have quite a few that surprised me as not being very popular models.

    For example:

    Ingenieur automatic (for Laureus)
    Portuguese Classic Chronograph (for LAUREUS)
Polo Club and the 1970's Round Club watches.

Perhaps the one I don't appreciate as much as I could / should is the Portofino chronograph (for Laureus). Doesn't sit so well on my wrist.

Like Jarrod, I often sport a contemporary Da Vinci... rarely seen in the wild. Never was a commercial hit, but then again tonneau shapes are generally significantly less popular watches. Still, I hope IWC doesn't completely 'kill' off the shape... it was my IWC entry-point, and others too (whoever few there may be...)

    regards,
    thang

What about a ref 5444. Portuguese regulator in steel with blue numerals?
