The wooden box of my Portuguese Automatic is my favourite. I love the texture of the wood and the reference plaque.

But I also like the rare box of my Ingy. ME Adventure Ecology. It is not so sophisticated, but is really practical and nice, and it means a great step forward in sustainable production practices.

So if I have to choose, my choice would be the Ingy box!

    Although they are environmentally unsustainable:

I have to agree that the timber boxes that housed my Portuguese 5001, Jubilee and Big Pilot are rather special. The environmentally friendly box which came with my most expensive and recent watch, PPC, is a very ordinary box, identical to the VC Inge box. If we are to save the world, dull utilitarian packages are the way forward. I'm glad that I've got some of the timber boxes too.

When I think of IWC packaging,

I think of a quote someone posting here attributed to Kurt Klaus. It was something along the line of:

Other companies put good stuff on the outside. IWC puts the good stuff on the inside.

Though Herr Klaus was referring to the watches, I think it applies to packaging as well. Note, this is not a criticism of the packaging - it is higher praise of the watches!

I like the wooden box too

The box came with my Portuguese Perpetual Calendar in 2003, it was really nice. When the watch is nice and luxurious, so should the package be, for that first one or two days. Then, when stashed away, I hardly notice it anymore. But I really want it to be luxurious for those first days. And the sustainability issue? Ah, give me a break, to put it politely.

    Kind regards,
Paul, wearing steel VC Pilot's watch, in a so so box, but who cares?

    b weird or[/b]

I admit, I admit, perhaps I'm not ordinary..
But I always, almost immediately, sell the boxes on e-bay or markplaats (Dutch equivalent). I find it much more easier to put them in travel cases and then in the safe, just like that. Arguments that I might need the boxes to sell them, are not realistic, since I never will part from them (not in this life anyways) perhaps my son has a problem when he inherits some..
    cheers
    Bas

    This is my favourite box...

Due to the content (currently in the safe).

And fully agree with Paul, boxes for these watches should be luxurious, but never kitsch.

And also, please give me a break, as we should all start thinking about all the plastic we consume and the related production cost for our coffee cups, each single slide of cheese / ham etc. packed into an individual plastic package, and so on and on....

    Ciao, Rob.

    Mine too...

and expensive it was. My Ref 5441 RG was originally part of a set of 3 and came without box. I acquired the box and (some) papers later.
And I do not think I am overusing the planet's resources, or contributing to its premature end. ,-)
