Hmmm. Can the sunrise and sunset timings could be set (or preset @ Schaffhausen)? Just hazarding a guess - please feel free to correct me with more lovely tidbits of information for this star-blazer.

    Michael Friedberg has written:

I hadn't considered the use of the disks in another watch, but I think it's a great idea and will mention it to IWC's product development team. It works best, though, with a watch that shows sunrises and sunsets --and do that complication right is complicated. I guess it could just change at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily (like the black/white colors on some 24 hour dials) but I wonder if that approaches being cute.

Still, it is amazing to watch!

Shing, the watch is preset to the owner's exact location, based on latitude, longitude and elevation. As such it will show the sunset and sunrise at the exact time at the owners' location.

An owner could, if desired, specify another location instead (such as the IWC factory at Schaffhausen or, say, the Munot there) but I'm not sure why one would want to do that. The location also affects the view of the star chart as well as the sunrise and sunset. In theory, everything is related in the universe.

The location specific setting of the chart would probably mean that when its owner relocates s/he would probably wants it redone, which I assume can be done for one who can commission it.

Michael. This is fantasic. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. I am amazed.

I think I am still challenged in my confidence to read what the display is indicating. I see the polarization changes occurring with the 2 red indicators. Am I right to see that sunrise is about 4:00am local time, and sunset is at 17:00 (5:00pm)? Is the horizon set for the location of the European Observatory in Chile? Or is the date on the watch set for winter?

Here in Europe one of the Pan-European News Channels regularly simply shows 1-2 minute live broadcasts of whatever is "making the news" at that moment, with ZERO commentary - only the words "NO COMMENT" at the bottom of the screen.

This watch should be shown there. It's world news - and this feature speaks for itself!

    Best regards
    Mark

The future of watchmaking? Will changing colors on the dial be next?

BTW, I love it! How lucky you are MF to have seen (and played) this amazing watch!

    Best,
    Larry
