My friend arrived at our monthly Toronto watch meeting with this little gem from the 1920s. He bought it from an owner who found it in Greece.

And compared size wise with a modern Da Vinci

Finding the right size for a rectangle or tonneau watch is quite difficult. It lies right in the middle of the two watches shown. To me, Vacheron Constantin, Girard-Perregaux and Cartier show the way. Alas, IWC will not offer the opportunity to buy a non-round watch in the near future, where these kind of watches are meant for a special niche of the market. Also, women are more attracted than men, it seems, to non-round shapes, and women are a huge market to target. I must admit, all my watches are round, but I keep looking at interesting non-round watches, they often have so much character.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

The "Horowitz" watch has almost certainly a cal.87 tonneau movement.
Its origin is special. Wolf Horowitz was a Rominian jeweller who settled in Alexandria where he became one of the leading Egyptian jewelers, based in Rue Chérif Pacha. His clientele were the local élite but also the Royal Courts of King Fouad I and King Farouk I. He made important jewelry in cooperatian with famous jewelry houses in Paris.
No wonder that he only sold the best watches available....
    Kind regards,
    Adrian,

This is a beautiful watch with an interesting pedigree. Thank you to Mark for the pics, and Adrian for the information about Mr. Horowitz.
